Stem Cell Act to be Repealed and Replaced

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas will repeal and replace its current Stem Cell Act; the health minister making the announcement during the 3-day Heal INC. Summit which kicked off Monday at the Atlantis Resort.

Connecting the dots between quality of life and patient access to future health technologies, that’s the aim of this year’s Heal INC Summit.

Health and Wellness Minister, Dr. Michael Darville, officially opening the three-day summit on Monday night and using the opportunity to address the stem cell issue.

He announced that the current stem cell act will now be repealed and replaced with a new modern one incorporating longevity, bio-technology and anti-aging.

It was nearly 10 years ago to the day on April 10th 213, then Prime Minister Perry Christie delivered a speech in the House of Assembly that introduced the act to regulate stem cell research and therapy in The Bahamas, comprising a legal framework designed to align the country with international best practices.

The bill was passed in August of that year over the topic that spurred controversy while also being praised as revolutionary in the medical field 

Other areas medical advancements are being explored during the summit.

CEO and Founder of Heal INC, Dr. Desiree Cox says the summit brings scientists from around the world to The Bahamas, giving Bahamians access to the same information and opportunities.

Now, the three-day conference will see some 50 international speakers, adding to the country’s medical tourism platform.

Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper says the event is important not only for tourism but the future of science and medicine.
