NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Years after trying to take his own life, Dexter Neymour still has the scars to remind him of that fateful day.

The 62-year-old was a man whose life was spiraling out of control when he decided to take his own life more than a decade ago.

The businessman, father, and husband had hit a rough patch in life, losing his pest control business and home, living in abandoned cars and buildings, when he says he just couldn’t face life’s problems anymore.

Neymour’s decision to end his life is not an isolated incident.

There have been dozens of others in recent years who’ve  chosen a similar fate after being overcome by a sense of hopelessness, anxiety, depression and other mental disorders.

The country is seeing an alarming rise in incidents.

There were eight suicides in 2024 and six in 2023.

But so far this year, the country has already recorded six suicides and at least three attempted suicides.

The most recent attempted suicide happened early Sunday morning. Police say that’s when a 79-year-old man allegedly tried to kill himself by stabbing himself in the abdomen.

Neymour says he was lucky that in his situation he had friends who were around when he tried to kill himself.

Since that fateful day he’s gotten the help he needs and is helping others. Today he’s a resident and worker at Teen Challenge Bahamas.

There, he helps other young men who’re facing issues he’s since conquered.
