NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Protecting our natural resources is one of the main goals of the Bahamas National Trust and now, the organization is finding a creative way to step up its game in doing just that.

We were invited to the Bonefish Pond where they, along with team members from the Department of Marine Resources and Perry Institute for Marine Science, where they launched homemade buoys.

It’s goal? BNT Senior Park Warden Anwar Rolle fills us in.

“Basically our purpose out here is to build capacity in country, we’ve partnered with conservation partners as well protected area managers to build these demarcation buoys which serve as an enforcement tool because they mark the boundaries of marine protected areas,” he said.

Duran Mitchell and Dana Culmer both made their own buoys from scratch. They say seeing their creation come to life for the purpose of protecting the environment they hold dear, is rewarding.

Project Manager Garth Jackson said this is only the beginning as more projects like this are coming soon.
