NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Regional leaders are preparing to gather here for their annual caucus, it’s one of two meetings held annually for CARICOM Heads of Government. As is customary, the hosting country’s leader becomes CARICOM chairman, which means prime minister philip davis takes the helm as chairman.

But with all the preparations and expenses, you might be inclined to ask what are the benefits of being a part of CARICOM.

When regional heads come together this month they will face a busy agenda. Top of the list – climate change and the crisis in Haiti.

Undoubtedly important issues, but why is it necessary to tackle these as a group ?

It goes to the heart of the question of the benefits of CARICOM membership as explained by

Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell.

Brent Symonette, served as Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister in several FNM administrations.

His explanation goes a bit further and there are economic considerations as well.

But what would happen if caricom didn’t exist?

While the public may not see tangible benefits of a CARICOM membership, there are many examples where this body has helped to advance our social, economic, and cultural agendas.

More recently and most notably, the regional response to the covid 19 pandemic.
