NASSAU, BAHAMAS – If you are a millennial like myself, you grew up hearing JJ Turnquest an iconic voice on one hundred Jamz.

Considered a pioneer when discussing women in entertainment. Jennie “JJ” Turnquest made her debut in the industry in 1994.

Looking back, she says,  it’s all surreal.

“It was a male-dominated industry when I got into it. I was reall,y really lucky to have some amazing women who were in the industry, like Shena C on Power 104 and Patrice Scavella rather who got me started in it, Tammi on Island FM, so there were only a couple of us, but we really stuck together. “

Despite being considered a minority in the industry, her impact was felt in a major way.

Her resume includes dozens of interviews with icons like Rita Marley, Jamie Foxx, Randy Jackson, Sean Paul, Allison Hinds, and more.

JJ’s talents are also taking her beyond the microphone of a radio station, hosting mega events headlined by top international artists, like NSYNC and the Marley family.

She told me her success was met with distasteful remarks from her male counterparts.

“I had men saying to me like I don’t know who you think you are, but it took me fifteen years to get here, and if you think you’re going to do this in a couple of years, and I’m like, ok, challenge accepted.”

JJ dared to break the stereotypes, forging a path for a new generation of women in entertainment.

She told me the only way to make it in the industry is with authenticity.

“Don’t let anyone try to put you into a box and tell you you have to be this, this, and this. If that’s how it has been done, then you need to move on to another arena or another area, because that’s not how it’s going to work. You gotta be yourself.”
