NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, Governor John Halkett was born in Scotland in 1768. Halkett served for four years from 1801.


In 1966, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip began their first royal visit to the Bahama Islands. The straw market was one of their stops while in Nassau for their two-day visit.


In 2017, at a Progressive Liberal Party meeting, in Fox Hill, then Prime Minister Perry Christie used an obscene gesture in response to an unspecified person, who he taunted as a ‘lunatic’, who he claimed said he should deny owning a condominium.

There was mixed reaction to the gesture with some calling for an apology or resignation. Two days later in the House of Assembly, Christie expressed regret over the incident.


On this day in 2019, fire destroyed the Britannia Mini Mall in Freeport, Grand Bahama. The building, which housed about a dozen businesses, was completely destroyed.

The cause of the blaze was suspected arson, and a woman was taken into custody and later charged with setting the fire.
