NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, the United States vessel, Miriam, wrecked off the coast of Great Inagua in 1817.

The Bahamas Historical Society notes the ship was traveling from Baltimore, Maryland to Jamaica when she ran aground.


In 1929 a Times News article details American mobster Al Capone’s purchase of an island in The Bahamas.


In 1941, the Nassau Rugby Team won the series against Yale to take its unbeaten record to 15 years. This photo shows the governor, Duke of Windsor who often kicked off the games.


On March 27, 1960, Eugene Davis was born in Moore’s Island, Abaco. Known by his stage name Geno D, he is a musician and entertainer who sings Rake n’ Scrape, Goombay and Junkanoo music.

Some of his hits include: Dat Gal Look Good, Inagua, Gal If I Had You and You Remember When.


In 2019, hailstorms were experienced in several settlements on the island of Grand Bahama.
