Several union leaders are threatening strike action, which could shut down multiple industries. They are all members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC). At a joint meeting last night, they said the question isn’t if they will strike but when.

Obie Ferguson – President, Trade Union Congress
“Big time. I mean, what else could it be?”

An energized crowd gathered outside the House of Labor on Wulff Road last night as the TUC held a rally, where its 41 unions expressed their frustration.

The rally comes three years after the TUC signed a memorandum of understanding with the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) while the party was in opposition. But since then, the relationship has soured.

Some union leaders and the opposition have accused TUC President Obie Ferguson of being a political pawn. When asked if he felt betrayed, Ferguson confirmed his disappointment.

Deron Brooks – President, Bahamas Customs, Immigration, and Allied Workers Union
“We’re not being personal or political at all. It is what it is—stand on what’s right, and dat’s it.”

Fred Munnings – Chairman, Trade Union Congress
“We’ve held on with all of this foolishness going on for three and a half years.”

Muriel Lightbourn – President, Bahamas Nurses Union
“2024 will not go out unless I have the rest of those promotions.”

Stephen McPhee – President, Bahamas Educators Managerial Union
“If you gat strike certificates, use ’em! Use them—there is no expiration date on them. The law speaks to having it.”
