NORTH ATLANTIC – The United States has seized a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic, accused of violating sanctions linked to Venezuelan and Iranian oil.

U.S. officials say the ship known as the Marinera, and also called Bella One, was deemed stateless after flying a false flag, part of what authorities describe as a “ghost fleet” operation.

The seizure, backed by air and naval support from the United Kingdom, came as a second tanker was intercepted in the Caribbean.

White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, says the crew could be brought to the United States for prosecution if necessary.

Russia has protested the move, saying the vessel was only temporarily flagged, and warning that foreign powers have no right to use force against registered ships.

Reports say the tanker is currently empty, though it has previously transported Venezuelan crude.
