UNITED STATES – The U.S. government will pay Moderna $176 million to speed up development of a bird flu vaccine, federal officials announced Tuesday.

Moderna’s early-stage vaccine uses MRNA technology, similar to its Covid-19 vaccine.

The funding will support continued development and a late-stage trial next year if initial results are positive.

Officials say the project can be redirected to other influenza strains if needed, including the H5N1 virus.
