The Blazers Defeat the Redhawks 24-20 To Win the 2022 Bahamas Bowl

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Blazers defeated the Miami University of Ohio 24-20 to win the 2022 HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl.

The game started off with a bang, with UAB quarterback Dylan Hopkins connecting with Trea Shropshire for a 46-yard bomb on the first play. Hopkins hit Shropshire again for a 10-yard touchdown for the first score of the game.

UAB would add a field goal to make the game 10-0 before the teams traded punts and turnovers on downs. Aveon Smith completed a 33-yard bomb to Mac Hippenhammer to put the Redhawks on the board 10-7.

Miami would score again on a pass to running back Kenny Tracy who made a ridiculous catch.

Shortlty afterwards, Miami recovered a UAB fumble with 6 minutes left up 20-17. The game should have ended there, however the drive stalled at the UAB 30 and Miami missed the field goal attempt, giving UAB a chance to win.

UAB embraced the opportunity with Hopkins turning to Shropshire once again with a 49-yard bomb.

UAB would then run down the clock handing the ball to Jermaine Brown, who won the game for the blazers with a 12-yard touchdown run.

UAB wideout Trea Shropshire took home the offensive MVP award with 6 catches for 183 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Dylan Hopkins completed 16 of 24 passes for 204 yards and running back Jermaine Brown Jr, substituting for Dewayne McBride, the country’s leading rusher had a workman-like 116 yards on 24 carries.

Aveon Smith of Miami threw for 162 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushed for 50 yards on 22 carries. Leading receiver Mac Hippenhammer was held to 2 catches for 43 yards.

Kickoff was at 11:30am and NFL greats Ben Roethlisberger, a Miami alum and Roddy White, an alum of UAB were on the sidelines.
