NASSAU, BAHAMAS – VJ Edgecombe has taken the basketball world by storm recently and we’re lucky enough to have the opportunity to watch him play here at home for the second consecutive year.
Edgecombe and the Baylor Bears arrived yesterday and hosted their final practice session this morning ahead of Thursday night’s tournament opener.
The Continental Baha Mar Hoops Men’s Championship tips off with the number 13 bears taking on the number 22 St. John’s Red Storm, Thursday night at 7 pm at the Baha Mar Convention Center.
In December 2023, Edgecombe and his Luhi Crusaders competed in the Hoopfest in paradise event at the Kendal Isaacs Gym, which featured some of the top prep basketball programs in America.
This year the stakes are higher, and so is the level competition.
While we’re talking Baha Mar Hoops, BD Global President Brooks Downing said he expects this year’s event to be one to remember.
The continental Baha Mar Men’s Championship will be up first, featuring three teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.
Of course the Bahamas’ very own VJ Edgecombe and the number 13 Baylor Bears headline that list, but the bracket also includes the number 11 Tennessee Volunteers, number 22 St. John’s Red storm, and the Virginia Cavaliers.
Meanwhile, the Bahamas senior men’s national basketball team returns to international competition this week for the second window of 2025 FIBA Americup qualification.
The team will be on the road to take on Cuba in Havana on Friday night at 6 pm, followed by a matchup against the United States in Washington, D.C., November 25th, at 7:10 pm.
For the first time, John Lucas III joins the staff for Team Bahamas and will serve as the head coach for this window.
Lucas, who had a 16-year pro career as a player, most recently served as an assistant coach on the staff of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Lakers, and Phoenix Suns.
The roster for Team Bahamas will be headlined by several national team vets, including frontcourt players David Nesbitt, Kentwan Smith, Sammy Hunter, Tavario Miller, and Aaron Levarity.
In the backcourt we’ll have Travis Munnings, Rashad Davis, Eron Gordon, and Godfrey Rolle III.
The Bahamas is in group D alongside Puerto Rico, the United States, and Cuba.
In the first window last February, Team Bahamas split games against Puerto Rico with a win on the road and a loss at home.
