Local Storm Chasers Seek Volunteers

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – November is National Volunteer Month, and while that may conjure up images of simple but meaningful tasks like walking shelter dogs or helping in beach clean-ups, some people want their community service to have a little more excitement. One of our local volunteer storm chasers, SI Weather Network offers just that.

Storm Intercept’s Weather Network’s Hurricane Intercept Divisional Director, Monique Palmisano tells us just what the volunteers at Storm Intercept Weather Network sign up for – tracking things like thunderstorms, funnel clouds, wildfire damage, and road obstructions after natural disasters.

The SI Weather Network is owned by Craig Lowe, and originally started as a hobby. Now, the network has over 30 active storm watch spotters.

They also instal state of the art weather stations, with two recent installations in Nassau, and they’re hoping to install 5 others in Abaco, Exuma, Eleuthera, Long Island, and Inagua.

With Hurricane Nicole, crews were out on the streets of New Providence yesterday surveying the effects of the storm surge but they say one thing they’re really missing is more volunteers, especially in the Family Islands.
