NASSAU, BAHAMAS – National Security Minister Wayne Munroe revealed a temporary gun amnesty program set to be rolled out later this week, allowing residents to surrender firearms without the possibility of prosecution.

Crime Consultant in the Ministry of National Security Carlos Reid says he is onboard with the program.

A local daily shared that over 90 percent of all murders were committed with firearms. Reid believes that while effective, an amnesty program that provides compensation will bear more fruit.

In the past, concerns have been raised about individuals using the program to extort government for money. Reid says the program has shown more good than bad while this is a possibility.
