Man Convicted Of Murder Of American Ordered To Be Released

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – An Appellate Court has ordered the release of a man whose conviction and 40-year sentence for the murder of an American tourist was overturned by the Privy Council.

Anton Bastian was convicted of the 2013 murder of American Kyle Bruner, who was shot dead after he intervened in the mugging of two women.

Bastian took part in the mugging, and another man, Craig Johnson, allegedly shot Bruner.

Last month, the Privy Council quashed Bastian’s murder and armed robbery convictions.

The country’s highest court ordered the local Appeals Court to sentence Bastian for the lesser charge of robbery and to decide if he would face a retrial for manslaughter.

Today, the Court of Appeal sentenced Bastian to eight years, one month and 17 days for the robbery, the time he’s spent in prison.

The court also ruled that Bastian shouldn’t be tried for manslaughter.
