NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas is no stranger to planning for disasters, but some one group finds itself left out of the conversation – members of the disabled community.

The Bahamas’ very own Erin Brown, a Disability Inclusion Consultant, has been advocating for disabled Bahamians for years, and recently aired her views on the issue during an Al Jazeera livestream.

Brown continued, noting we have to continue to speak about barriers and gaps that exist, not limited to physical and infrastructural issues. She says policies and practices do not speak to people with disabilities during an emergency or a disaster.

That also means having a register of disabled people in the country, but there are hurdles with that also.
