FNM Leader: “The PLP Tried to Sell the Bahamian People a Dream”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The government is painting a picture of economic stability, declaring growth, a balanced budget, and opportunity island by island, but opposition leader Michael Pintard says it’s all a dream.

“The Prime Minister stood before the House and tried to sell the Bahamian people a dream—a dream of opportunity island by island. But while the Prime Minister dreams, Bahamians are living a harsh reality. One where the cost of living keeps rising.”

Among Prime Minister Davis’s major announcements was a VAT reduction on medical supplies. But Pintard argues that this is not relief—it’s damage control.

“When the FNM left office, feminine products and medicine were VAT-free. The PLP slapped on 10%—then turned around, dropped it to 5%, and called it relief. That’s not help—that’s damage control.”

He also challenged the government’s claim of a balanced budget and surplus, pointing to unpaid public sector workers and businesses still waiting for money owed.

“When Davis says there’s a surplus, you have to ask—how? When so many of the government’s own bills remain unpaid?”

Pintard took aim at cuts to social assistance, noting that nearly \$10 million was slashed from support programs in just eight months.

He also criticized the administration’s track record on healthcare infrastructure and delivery.

“Ambulances bought with taxpayer money sit idle. While they were not under factors, they were not road safety ready. Hospitals are overcrowded, crumbling, and under-resourced. The promised new hospitals? Really, it’s just that—a promise. Words on paper with no plan for staffing.”

Citing confusion around budget allocations and unmet needs, Pintard offered a harsh final grade on the Davis administration’s fiscal performance.

“We are unclear on whether the nine [million] he mentioned today is nine on top of the 15. At best, lackluster…we’ll give him a D.”

As Parliament continues its debate, the gap between government optimism and opposition criticism highlights growing public concern about whether fiscal headlines will ever translate into real-life improvements for Bahamians.
