GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Bahamians across the country are commemorating Majority Rule Day, a pivotal moment in the nation’s history that has significantly shaped the modern Bahamas. On Thursday, former Prime Minister Perry Christie visited the rotary club of Freeport’s weekly meeting, where he focused on the holiday’s profound meaning and impact.

Majority Rule Day was first observed as a public holiday in 2014, marking The Bahamas’ achievement of Majority Rule on January 10, 1967. This milestone is widely regarded as one of the most significant events in Bahamian history, symbolizing the promise of equality, fair play and a level playing field for all citizens.

During his remarks at the rotary meeting in Freeport, former Prime Minister Perry Christie shared the importance of this annual observance. He reminded attendees that if there is one central message of majority rule, it is that all individuals are born equal and should be treated with dignity and respect.

He also reflected on the Burma Road Riots in the 1950’s.

The former Prime Minister says countless individuals played critical roles in fostering the country’s growth, underscoring that Majority Rule Day stands out as one of the single most significant moments in Bahamian history.
