FREEPORT, GRAND BAHAMA – The University of The Bahamas North will be getting a second life as an environmental research center. The facility, which was badly damaged during Hurricane Dorian, will serve not only the university’s environmental programs but international researchers as well.

Jillian Gray reports.

With power lines still down, visible water marks, and debris still scattered on the property, UB north still holds the signs of the aftermath of hurricane Dorian.

The campus was under over six feet of water during the monster storm, but it is now getting a second life as an environmental research center.

From solar lights to naturally-cooled classrooms Vice President Dr. Ian Strachan says they’re designing the facility as a field office for both local and international environmentalists.

The goal is for UB north to be a center for excellence in the sciences.

Grants for research have already begun to pour in and government support was pledged when Minister of Works Alfred Sears toured the facility.
