GUYANA – British Foreign Secretary David Cameron on Thursday called for Venezuela to cease unilateral action over the border with Guyana amid growing tensions between the two countries.

The long-running spat over the oil-rich Esequibo region escalated over the weekend when voters in Venezuela rejected the International Court of Justice’s jurisdiction and backed the creation of a new Venezuelan state.

Guyana has questioned the vote’s legitimacy and have since put its armed forces on high alert.

In a televised address this week President Ifraan Ali announced he had brought the matter to the United Nations Security Council for appropriate action.
