NASSAU, BAHAMAS – An increase in dengue fever cases across New Providence is causing officials to kick into high gear to mitigate the spread of the viral infection.

Assistant Director at the Department of Environmental Health Services, Luther Ferguson, told Our News that rather than fogging the entire island, their efforts have been targeting areas with reported cases.

On Monday, September 4th, health officials reported 52 confirmed cases, three of those on the island of Grand Bahama.

Ferguson is encouraging residents to lower their risk of dengue by keeping their surroundings clean and removing any materials in their yard that may attract mosquitoes.

As for the fogging efforts, he says that exercise attacks the adult mosquito.

If you need help discarding any materials that may attract mosquitoes contact the Department of Environmental Health Services at 322-8037.
