NASSAU, BAHAMAS – March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and a local physician is warning of the signs of the life threatening disease.

Gastroenterologist, Dr. Eugene Marcus Cooper says colon cancer can affect anyone.

Dr. Cooper says a colonoscopy can eliminate an individual’s risk of developing the cancer in the large intestine. The prevalence of colon cancer is increasing, and people have been presenting with the disease before the age of 40.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and Dr. Cooper says there are some symptoms and risk factors to look out for, including, smoking, low fiber diets, obesity.

It can also be hereditary, which is why it is important to know your family history.
