NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Parliamentarians past and present filling the foyer of the House of Assembly Thursday to pay respect to former Cabinet Minister and Exuma MP George Smith.

Among them were former Prime Ministers Perry Christie and Hubert Ingraham.

Ingraham who served with Smith says they first met in 1972.

Smith served as a member of Parliament for Exuma for 29 years before stepping down from frontline politics.

Smith was a signatory at the Constitutional Conference in 1972 which laid the groundwork for Bahamian independence.

He also held several cabinet posts including Minister of Transport, Agriculture, and more recently Special Advisor to The Prime Minister ahead of the 50th independence celebration.

Former Prime Minister Perry Christie says Smith was an outstanding MP.
