NETHERLANDS – While the UK and many nations grapple with overcrowded prisons, the Netherlands is facing a unique challenge – and that is a shortage of inmates.

With 19 prisons closed in recent years and more slated for closure, the government has revealed plans to shut down five more, resulting in the loss of 1,900 jobs.

Local media reports the decline is attributed to judges granting shorter sentences and a substantial reduction in serious crime. This as tracking devices have enable some offenders to serve sentences while remaining part of the community.

Government has reportedly prioritized diversion, reintegration, and rehabilitation programs, emphasizing skills development for inmates.
