NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The second woman to become Speaker of the House of Assembly is vowing to be fair to both sides of the political divide as she settles into her new role.

You can now address her as Madam Speaker. Born and raised in Bamboo Town, Patricia Deveaux has gone from being a civil servant to now speaker of the House of Assembly. She says her aim is to be fair to both sides.

The role of House Speaker has been quite controversial over the past few years with former Speaker Halson Moultrie railing against government over numerous issues, including the separation of powers and the condition of his office.

She took a few minutes to speak with us during the first day of this new job in the office she has plans to transform.

Living in the constituency she represents, Deveaux says her priority is the people of Bamboo Town.

As the second woman to sit in the chair as speaker of the House of Assembly, Deveaux says she certainly hopes many others will come after her.
