NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On behalf of the Official Opposition, the Free National Movement including my own family, I wish to extend condolences to the family of Omar Davis Jr, who has become the latest murder victim in our country.

Like so many in the country, we became aware of the potential and talent of Omar Davis Jr when he gave a passionate speech in 2018 during a Ministry of Education event where he gracefully acknowledged the reception of a scholarship to attend Central State University.

During his speech, he spoke candidly about his upbringing and his family’s history which included the death of his father. However one of the highlights of his speech was when he shared that his father asked him to follow a better path than he did and that he used his father’s voice as inspiration and excelled in his studies, graduating that year from C.I. Gibson as the Valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. He received a standing ovation when he said “Now that same boy from Kemp Road who is gonna be just like his dad as they once said, graduated Valedictorian from his high school, will be the first person in his immediate family to go to college and is a 2018 public school scholar”. He further challenged the audience that, “It isn’t where you start but where you end” and “look forward to hearing great things about me and God’s willing you all are invited to my graduation in 2022 from Central State University”.

Well Omar Davis Jr kept his promise, graduating this past May from Central State University with not one, but two degrees. He proudly claimed on his social media page “No time for small talk! I graduated with a double degree and 4.0 cumulative!” No doubt his family as well as many well-wishers back home in the Bahamas, were extremely proud of what Omar had accomplished.

The killing of Omar Davis Jr, a young man with much potential, has sent shock waves throughout our country as yet again, families and the community that have given them birth record another tragic demise of another young man. We must all collectively continue to call for and demand that the senseless bloodshed and human carnage cease on our streets.

We also offer our condolences to all of the mothers, fathers and family members of all victims of murder in our country. Please know that each of you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Omar’s story and his journey represents a bright light, a ray of hope for our young people, especially our young men, that once you apply yourself there is truly nothing you cannot achieve. His dogged determination to succeed against all odds was and will forever be an inspiration to many
