NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Senators debating the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI) bill, expected to lay the foundation for the future of agriculture and marine science in the country.

Sasha Lightbourne has more.

The new BAMSI 2022 bill will establish the institute and put in the necessary regulatory framework to govern its operation.

The bill passed in the House of Assembly Wednesday night and made its way to the Senate on Thursday.

Minister of Economic Affairs Michael Halkitis led debate, explaining BAMSI’s important role in achieving food security for the country.

Halkitis says this is a right step forward in our national development.

Sadly, Senator Tyrel Young, who also serves as BAMSI chairman , says he believes half of the population does not even know what BAMSI is, or what purpose it serves.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Business in the Senate, Darren Henfield agreed that food security is important for Bahamians, and agricultural issues should be addressed across party lines.
