As I See It

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – “The Minnis era is over!” Those profound words came from the mouth of the chairman of the Free National Movement, Dr. Duane Sands, as he told the world there is only one leader of his party and that is Michael Pintard.

When Sir Cecil Wallace-Whitfield sought out Hubert Ingraham with the vision of the FNM seriously stepping up to take governance of this country, he was a determined man who had his members together with one goal – winning. At that time, people put their egos and personal aspirations aside to focus on winning the 1992 elections. And, that is what they did – win.

There are undercurrent rumblings in the FNM indicating that the former leader, Dr. Hubert Minnis is set to attempt a leadership comeback at the next FNM convention. Besides the rumblings, Dr. Minnis’ followers are said to be disrespectfully circulating flyers with his photo and what they claim to be his accomplishments; as if he was still leader. This is wrong in so many ways!

Free National Movement Leader Michael Pintard

At the Progressive Liberal Party’s last convention, Philip Brave Davis was voted in as leader. The Christie era was over and PLPs understood and digested that and moved on supporting their new leader. Commendable!

People are whispering that Dr. Minnis and his so-called minions, are trying to hold on to a power that more than likely will never get back into his hands.

Pintard recently said the FNM under his leadership, is an entirely different party from the FNM that demitted office in September of last year. Clearly he is pushing the FNM in a certain direction away from what people thought of it during its governance – Uncaring! Arrogant! Unfriendly!

Some FNMs should realize that undermining their leader is not an attractive look if they are trying to attract supporters. Or is it that the selfish few do not care if they destroy the party just to appease someone who is accused of causing it to lose the 2021 elections in the first place?

My unsolicited advice is to respect and support your leader, FNMs. Wisen up! Don’t disgrace the founders of your party by tearing it apart because of what might be promised to you or what you received ‘last time’. That’s another story!

Sir Cecil, Jimmy Shepherd and the others who have gone on to glory, must be uneasy in their graves. There can only be one leader! Well, that’s how I see it, anyway!
