NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Police say a predawn operation turned violent early Thursday morning when an 81-year-old man opened fire on officers attempting to execute a search warrant at a West Bay Street residence.

The incident unfolded shortly before 1:00 a.m., when the Police Anti-Gang and Firearms Task Force, supported by K-9 units, approached a two-storey home. Officers say a woman inside refused entry, prompting them to breach the garage and begin clearing the residence.

As they approached a third-floor room, police say the elderly man opened fire. Officers retreated and returned fire. The man was shot in the right arm and lower body and was later transported to hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

Police recovered two illegal firearms and ammunition from the home. A 66-year-old woman was also taken into custody.

At daylight, residents in the normally quiet Sea Beach community were stunned. Sea Beach Homeowners Association President Pauline Davis confirmed that the man shot was well-known businessman Al Collie.

“The person that was shot… Mr. Collie is an amazing member of our Sea Beach family. He’s always been very supportive of anything we are doing in Sea Beach Estate. He always makes sure to help, whether he does it himself or supports financially.”

Collie is a prominent figure in Bahamian entertainment history. He owned several successful nightclubs including The Palace on Elizabeth Avenue and Club Luna, formerly The Zoo. He also served as the former lead singer of Al Collie and the VIPs.

Davis, a decorated Olympian and longtime resident of the area, says the neighborhood is peaceful, close-knit and known for cooperating with police on safety issues. She described Collie as an upstanding member of that community.

“I’m stunned… I don’t even know what to say because I don’t know the circumstances. All I do know is that the person who got shot is a very, very important member of our Sea Beach family.”

While members of Collie’s camp declined to comment on his condition, Davis offered what she had heard.

“It seems he’s resting comfortably. I understand he’s resting.”
