Education Minister Hopes Job Fair Will Put A Dent In Teacher Shortage

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Ministry of Education in partnership with the Department of Labor held a job fair over the weekend in hopes to address the teacher shortage in The Bahamas.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It’s being called a classroom crisis – countries around the world are facing teacher shortages.

UNESCO reporting that the issue is now leading to larger classroom sizes overburdened educators, educational disparities, and financial strain on educational systems.

And The Bahamas is also feeling the impact. The Ministry of Education is stepping outside the box to get more teachers in the payroll.

They recently partnered with the Department of Labor for a job fair that was attended by dozens of potential prospects to teach classes across the country.

Cornell Clarke Jr. holds a degree in business management and administration. He says he also has teaching experience and plans to turn that into a career in education.

Jasmine Rolle holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and did not apply to be a teacher. However, she wants to enter the education industry as a trainee guidance counselor.

Minister of Education Glenys Hanna-Martin says this is just one of the plans the ministry has implemented to recruit and retain educators.

She says the job fair came from a recently concluded survey.
