NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The country’s top local court has refused to reopen the appeal of a man who tried to kill his estranged wife after he caught her with another man.

Michael Scott was in 2012  sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment for the attempted murder of Shaneka Colebrooke.

At midnight on December 29, 2020, Colebrooke and David Rolle were walking through Palm Beach Street when a white car sped towards them.

Rolle pushed Colebrooke out of the way, but he was hit by the car. Scott exited the car, while armed with a knife, and said, “If I can not have you, no one can” before he stabbed her 14 times.

Rolle came to Colebrooke’s rescue and was killed in the fight that followed. However,  the jury could not reach a verdict on the murder charge and Scott is awaiting a second trial for Rolle’s death.

The Court of Appeal dismissed Scott’s against conviction and sentence in 2016.

Scott petitioned the Court of Appeal to rehear his appeal with regard to the sentence. However, the Court found that there were no exceptional circumstances to warrant reopening the appeal.
