NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A monumental moment for Mayaguana as a European cruise ship sailed to the island for the first time.

Cherika Johnson has more.

For the first time, a cruise ship docks in Mayaguana. The Club Med II cruise ship arrived on Monday bringing more than 300 passengers to the island.

Chief Councilor Huel Williamson welcomed the ship and its visitors.

The ship, which sailed from Europe to Mayaguana, is a much-welcomed sign for the local economy which is heavily dependent on tourism.

Island administrator Deborah Moxey-Rolle says it positioned the island as a contending tourist destination.

Junkanooers greeted guests while local vendors sold Bahamian food and souvenirs.
