The First Bahamian To Coach in The Majors Is Parting Ways With His Team

SAN FRANCISCO, USA – Antoan Richardson made history in 2020 becoming the first Bahamian to coach major league baseball when he was named First Base Coach of the San Francisco Giants. His tenure with the team has come to an end.

The move comes in the midst of an overhaul of the coaching staff that saw Manager Gabe Kapler lose his job along with the rest of his staff.

The Giants had a 29-31 record in a covid-shortened 2020 before embarking on a 107-55 campaign in 2021 where they won the division title of their hated rival, the before flaming out in the National League Division Series against those same Dodgers.

For that season, Kapler won Manager of the Year. But he could never live up to those expectations and the Giants had back-to-back. Five hundred seasons in 2022 and 2023, prompting Kapler’s firing. Richardson was collateral damage in Kapler’s dismissal.

Before serving as the Giants’ First-Base Coach, Richardson served as a Field Coordinator and Outfield Coordinator, overseeing player development in the minor leagues.

Richardson has yet to announce his next stop but is very active in The Bahamas in his off seasons conducting a number of youth sports and educational initiatives.

We highly doubt that will change no matter which team he’s employed with next.
