NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It’s a sound many of us have grown accustomed to, a Marco Alert is an attention-grabbing notification on cellphones, signifying that a minor has been reported missing.

It includes their name, age, description and where they were last seen.

Assistant Commissioner of Police responsible for Information and Technology Zhivago Dames, says these alerts are sent out after an official report is filed with police.

Some have criticized the time it takes to release these alerts. As Dames explains, there’s a reason for it.

When reporting a missing child, Superintendent Nathaniel Gilbert, who is responsible for the Missing and Exploited Persons Division, says information is important.
