NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Bahamian advocate Marion Bethel has taken up a new post. The attorney and human rights expert has been elected to Vice-Chairperson and Rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Committee on Women & Girl’s Rights.

During the 84th session of the UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, or CEDAW committee, she was elected to the position of vice-chairperson and rapporteur.

Bethel has been working with CEDAW since June 2016, when she became the first Bahamian to be elected to a UN Human Rights Treaty body.

As for her newest post, she was elected on February 6, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Bethel also says her achievement marks another milestone for the global leadership of Bahamian women.

CEDAW is the only international human rights treaty that focuses explicitly on the rights of women.

It’s a position that highlights her lifelong commitment to advancing the rights of women in The Bahamas, the Caribbean and around the world.

Bethel will serve on the bureau of the CEDAW committee with Ana Palaez Narvez of Spain, chairperson of the committee, along with three other vice-chairpersons from Bulgaria, Japan and Nigeria.

Her term ends December 2024.
