Those results sent Bahamas Host into the bronze medal game.
WNBA
Bahamian WNBA star Jonquel Jones received one of the highest honors of her career Monday night as the Connecticut Sun retired her No. 35 jersey in a pregame ceremony at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
Jones, who spent six seasons with the Sun from 2017 to 2022, became just the seventh player in franchise history to have her jersey retired, cementing her place among the organization’s all-time greats.
During her time in Connecticut, Jones helped lead the Sun to WNBA Finals appearances in 2019 and 2022 while building one of the most decorated résumés in franchise history. Her accolades included being named WNBA MVP in 2021, WNBA Most Improved Player in 2017 and WNBA Sixth Player of the Year in 2018.
She earned All-WNBA First Team honors in 2021 and was selected to the All-WNBA Second Team in 2017, 2019 and 2022. Jones was also one of the league’s premier defenders, earning All-Defensive First Team recognition in 2019 and 2021 and All-Defensive Second Team honors in 2022.
Her impact is also reflected throughout the franchise record book. Jones remains Connecticut’s all-time leader in blocked shots with 270, ranks third in franchise history with 68 double-doubles and sits among the franchise leaders in scoring with 2,657 career points.
Jones was unable to play in Monday night’s game against her current team, the New York Liberty, after being a late scratch due to illness. However, she received a standing ovation from the Connecticut crowd as her No. 35 jersey took its place in the rafters.
