Former Cabinet Minister Son Pleads Guilty for Drug Possession

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The son of former Free National Movement Cabinet Minister Dion Foulkes has pleaded guilty to possession of an ounce of marijuana. 

Police arrested 23-year-old Dion Foulkes Jr on November 17 on the Western Road after he tried to evade them.

The officers found 11 packages of marijuana during a search of his 2009 Jeep Cherokee.

Foulkes was initially charged with drug possession with intent to supply; however, the prosecutor reduced the charge to simple possession.

His lawyer, Ian Cargill, asked the court to allow Foulkes to seek private counseling for his drug addiction.

He said Foulkes was a self-employed businessman and student, who is pursuing a degree in cybersecurity.

Magistrate Samuel McKinney placed Foulkes on probation for six months and ordered him to complete drug counseling at a recognized institution.

If he successfully completes drug counseling and probation, Foulkes will receive an absolute discharge when he returns to court on July 28.

On the other hand, Foulkes will be convicted and ordered to pay a $500 fine to avoid spending three months in prison if he breaches his probation.
