SOUTHERN BAHAMAS – And for the next few days this would be the home for myself and cameraman Raychard Ferguson.

The HMBS Bahamas, is the pride and flagship of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force. It’s home and workplace for one our busiest board patrol units.

Interesting fact: the vessel, purchased before the turn of the century has been in service longer than I’ve been alive.

Coxswain Chief Petty Officer Lamont Thurston has responsibility for the men, and women on board.

The 60-meter boat ironically, holds up to 60 crew who are fully trained in on-board safety, communication and respect for the chain of command.

Petty Officer Jordan Sands is the bosun mate. He oversees deck duties and anchoring – all very serious business.

But for many of these marines, the best part of the job is giving back.

Later this week, learn more about the work of the defense force in patrolling the Southern Bahamas.
