NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – Jermaine Rolle is a police officer by profession but an author by passion.

An officer of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, but when he’s not investigating cases, he’s writing poems, publishing books and helping to inspire the next generation of writers.

Our Delvardo Emmanuel reports.

By day, he’s Inspector Rolle, a 17-year veteran of the Royal Bahamas Police Force assigned to the Financial Crimes Investigation Branch.

While many know him for following the money and investigating financial crimes, after hours, Rolle trades reports for writing stories designed to inspire others.

Poetry, he says, was his first love.

“ The first book that I wrote was Cries of a Poetic Soul. This was the very first book that I wrote, and this was a labor of love because, um, I was inspired by Myles Munroe when he said- His purpose was to die empty. And I felt like there was something in me that needed to be get out, that needed to be exposed to the world, and this was my effort in doing that. Um, that, so this was my first published book in 2015. And I, and I felt that release that, that you get when you know you accomplished something that you, that’s a burning desire.”

I first met Rolle during a three week internship with Our News team, where he was exploring another passion, Media. That’s when we discovered his impressive body of written work.

His love for the arts led him to create the Bahamas Poetry Competition – a national online contest that has given hundreds of aspiring writers an opportunity to showcase their talent.

And since publishing his first book in 2015, rolle has released two more titles.

One of them, “From The Depths Of” ,which holds special meaning. His daughter, Ajene, was just 12 years old when she contributed several poems to the collection.

“ If she’s not already a better writer than me, she will be a better writer than me. She is amazing. Her work is, um, towards the end of the book. So it’s a collaborative project. Um, she has, I think, five entries in this book. And this book, the first book was mostly romantic poetry, but this, this book actually, uh, took a step further. And the, if you check out the rhyme schemes in this book, it’s more freestyle as opposed to being a slave to the rhyme metric.”

And then came a challenge he never saw coming, writing a children’s book – “When Cats Fly”.

“ It’s a really, really interactive book because it, it goes into several themes. There’s, uh… You have colors, shapes, numbers. There’s some science in there as well. Um, and it’s a- all a journey of, of friendship.”

Now, with three published books under his belt, Rolle says he’s already looking ahead.

He’s currently working on a series of short stories, including one inspired by his childhood growing up on a family island.

And for those who dream of becoming writers, he offers this advice.

“ My advice is to never stop writing, never stop seeking that inspiration. If there’s something in you, if there’s some burning desire in you to write, don’t, don’t ignore the calling.”

Rolle’s books can be found on Amazon.cm and on his website, jermainerolle.com for purchase.
