NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On Monday Lavita Thurston surprised many by forgiving the man convicted of killing her daughter nine years ago.

Less than an hour after our interview wrapped, convicted murderer Anthony Bethel escaped from custody as he was being treated at the Princess Margaret Hospital around 3:30pm.

Police informing the public he escaped seven hours later, just after 10pm and was captured just before eight Tuesday morning.

His escape came just three days after he was convicted of killing Georgette Rahming. She was just 21 when her life was tragically cut short while she was sitting on the front porch of her Palmetto Avenue on May 26, 2015.

The turn of events was shocking for her mom, Lavita Thurston.

Thurston says she found out he escaped after family members alerted her.

When asked if she’s continuing her plea for mercy for Bethel, Thurston said no matter what the penalty, it would not bring her daughter back.

Thurston isn’t the only one concerned about the prisoner’s escape. Our News visited the East and Hay Street areas Tuesday morning where I spoke to residents.

One of them telling me he was concerned about the safety of his family.

With Bethel back at the Bahamas Department of Corrections, police have not said if or when Bethel would be charged with the escape.
