NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The nation is keeping a close eye on former Anglican Archbishop Drexel Gomez’s health as he remains in hospital battling stomach cancer and pneumonia.

The news of archbishop Drexel Gomez’s hospitalization sending shockwaves across the nation.

His family released a statement on Sunday evening saying Gomez is battling stomach cancer.

They also revealed the retired clergyman underwent surgery and was also being treated for pneumonia.

Right Reverend Laish Boyd, who is the Anglican Bishsop for The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, says Gomez has been in hospital since ash Wednesday.

The 88-year-old, has spent much of his life in service to the Anglican Church as Parish Priest, Diocesan Administrative Treasure, Bishop of Barbados, Bishop of The Bahamas and then later the entire Province of the West Indies from 1996 until his retirement in 2009.

Boyd says his decades of service showed how committed Gomez was to serving the church.

“He has had a long, diverse stellar commitment of service in the diocese in the Province in the way the union be very concerned because of you he still has a lot left to offer much wisdom experience and insight, said Reverend Boyd.
