HAITI – Haiti’s former Central Bank Chief Fritz Alphonse Jean has stepped into the role of the country’s rotating president, taking charge during one of its most violent periods.

His term runs until August 7th.

Jean took over from architect Leslie Voltaire on Friday and wasted no time addressing the nation’s gang violence.

Jean promised a “Rectifying war budget” and plans to recruit and train over 3,000 new police and military personnel this year.

Despite allocating $227 million to national police, Haiti’s security forces still struggle to match the power of heavily armed gangs.
