GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – It was news no one expected. On the morning of September 25th, Social Services Minister Obie Wilchcombe was found unresponsive.

Immediately, crowds gathered outside the Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport.

The prime minister and his cabinet colleagues soon touched down, visiting the hospital, then on to the PLP headquarters in Freeport for an emotional press conference.

Prime Minister Philip Davis recalled how Wilchcombe became rooted in politics through his parents, formally joining politics as a PLP senator in 1994.

He wore many hats in his political career holding titles like party chairman, senator, cabinet minister and leader of government business in the House.

Wilchcombe was also credited with bringing the film industry to The Bahamas.

His party and parlimentary colleagues calling him an extraordinary nationalist.

Even his political rivals, the Free National Movement took an opportunity to honour him.

From the community of West Grand Bahama that he represented, expressions of grief for a tremendous loss.

Over in Bimini, mourners gathered at the PLP headquarters to remember his life and legacy.

Former Prime Minister Perry Christie says he was more than a colleague, but a friend who contributed greatly to the tourism industry place.

Wilchcombe was also involved in the development of sports.

Wilchcombe’s daughter, Adida Isaacs, in an interview with Our News, described her father’s passing as almost unfair in some respects.

Calls go out for the government to ensure Wilchcombe is memorialized in a meaningful way.

The PLP is promising the West Grand Bahama constituency that a fit and proper candidate will be selected for the seat that is now vacant.

Prime Minister Philip Davis is temporarily assuming the role of minister of social services, information and broadcasting.

Governor General Cynthia Pratt has officially been notified of the death of West End Grand Bahama and Bimini MP Obie Wilchcombe set in motion a writ for a bi-election.

His remains are to be interred in a family plot in West End.
