GUYANA – Customs officers in Guyana apprehended three individuals, including two American citizens, attempting to board an American airlines flight to New York.

Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) reported that the arrests followed the discovery of 240 ounces of gold jewelry, disguised as silver-plated items and valued at over US$560,000, being transported without the required permits.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is investigating whether the individuals are part of a larger gold smuggling ring.

Charges under the customs and anti-money laundering acts are expected.
