URCA: We Cannot Abandon The People of Grand Bahama

GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – For the first time in almost five years, the Utilities Regulation & Competition Authority (URCA) is Grand Bahama.

This week they are holding a series of town hall meetings on the northern island.

Our News attended the first of the three meetings at Calvary Temple where it was revealed that URCA is in a legal dispute with the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA).

URCA is the regulator of the electricity and electronic communications sector across The Bahamas.

But according to Corporate and Consumer Relations Matters Manager Juan McCartney, the primary concern is who regulates electricity and energy within the port area?

That concern has now led to a legal dispute.

Mccartney reveals URCA is looking to set up a presence in the northern Bahamas and he also explained he receives several issues from Grand Bahama but it’s often difficult to address.

President of the Coalition of Concerned Citizens Pastor Eddie Victor was among those in attendance.

He says he believes if URCA had more control of the port area the results would be more favorable for the city of Freeport as he claims the voices of Grand Bahamians are often unheard.

Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) President David McGregor shared what he’s looking forward to from the meetings as they are pleased to see URCA in Grand Bahama.
