NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Sustainable cities do more than implement more eco-friendly alternatives to traditional city planning, the greener adaptations can help reduce costs, and create more opportunities for citizens to get out and socialize with their communities.

But what does it take to become a sustainable city?

In New Providence, a start could be an increased focus on public transportation methods, might look like creative solutions like electric trolleybuses, or even things as simple as designating specific lanes for carpooling, electric cars, and buses.

Most sustainable cities focus on public transport, clean energy, “green” buildings with rooftop gardens, increasing local food production to reduce shipping emissions, water conservation, and more public green spaces.

And making these changes does more than just help the future, it can also help in the present, with the use of green energy and opting to construct green buildings which can reduce power bills.

Increased green spaces also help to reduce urban flooding and reduce the amount of heat trapped in roads and pavements. Something we would all appreciate in the rainy and warm summer months.
