UNITED STATES – The 6-foot-6 center from Grand Bahama had 16 points, nine rebounds, and five assists as the New York Liberty edged the Phoenix Mercury 94-92 in the desert.

Sabrina Ionescu led the Liberty with 27 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds, while Jonquel Jones’ backup, Han Xu, added 17 points off the bench in just 22 minutes.

DeWanna Bonner and Kahleah Copper scored 25 points apiece for the Mercury.

The Liberty led by as many as 10 points in the first half before falling behind by 10 in the third quarter. They rallied late in the period and held off a late Phoenix comeback to secure the victory.

Baseball

Jazz Chisholm Jr. returned to the New York Yankees’ lineup but went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts as New York fell 5-2 to the Chicago Cubs.

First base coach Antoan Richardson and the Atlanta Braves won their fourth straight game overall and their third consecutive victory over division rival Washington, defeating the Nationals.

Matt Olson, Dominic Smith, and Ronald Acuña Jr. all homered for Atlanta.

Down in the minors, BJ Murray went 1-for-4 with a double as his Triple-A Iowa Cubs lost 7-4 to the Scranton RailRiders.

Kristian Robinson doubled in the Triple-A Reno Aces’ 9-8 loss to the Round Rock Express.

Texas Rangers top prospect Sebastian Walcott went 0-for-3 as his Double-A Frisco RoughRiders were shut out 7-0 by the Corpus Christi Hooks.

Daunte Stuart went 1-for-4 with an RBI single and scored a run as the High-A Jersey Shore BlueClaws routed the Hudson Valley Renegades 14-6.
