We Need More Adoptive Parents

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Child Protection Month is celebrated in the month of April, and at a press conference raising awareness of the month, Social Services officials have a special call to the public.

There are over 150 children under the care of Social Services, spread out over seven facilities in Grand Bahama, Cat Island, and New Providence.

Acting Director of the Department of Social Services Charlamae Fernander, says they’re hoping for more of those children to be able to find permanent homes.

Fernander says while there is a steady stream of people applying to adopt children, they often request infants..

Social Services Minister Myles Laroda also calling for inclusivity when choosing to adopt a child.

Fernander says it’s vital that people don’t count themselves out prematurely because of what they think it takes to be foster or adoptive parents.
