Basketball Tryouts

Coach Yo is back roaming the sidelines for Team Bahamas and anticipation is already building for the potential of this talented group. The Bahamas Basketball Federation’s senior women’s national team program hosted its first session of tryouts at the Kendal Isaacs Gym.

The group was highlighted by a few players well known to Coach Yo, Ole Miss alum Valerie Nesbitt and current Ole Miss sophomore Rhema Collins. “Val was great today… part of the program,” said Yolett McPhee-McCuin, head coach of the senior women’s national team.

Dayton Flyers sophomore Denika Lightbourne, incoming freshman for the Temple Owls Adena Webster, Garden City sophomore Antoincia Moultrie, and high schooler Terell McCoy were also standouts on day one.

Coach Yo returned to her role as head coach of the senior women’s program back in March. During her previous stint, she led the team to the 2015 CBC Basketball Championship. “And it’s really exciting… nurture the talent,” McPhee-McCuin added.

VJ Edgecombe’s Promising Future

The high school accolades are in the books, and as he finishes summer vacation, VJ Edgecombe is already looking ahead to a promising future with Baylor Basketball. The highly touted prospect heads to Waco, Texas, to join the Bears this fall.

Edgecombe highlights a Bears class rated as high as No. 2 in the country by On3.com. ESPN, Rivals, and 247 Sports also have the Bears’ 2024 class ranked in the top five. Baylor men’s basketball is coming off its fifth-straight NCAA tournament appearance. They’re also the only program in the country to be a No. 3 seed or higher in each of the last four NCAA tournaments. “The transition has been… and win the natty,” said Edgecombe.

Team Bahamas Baseball

It was a great run, but in the end, Team Bahamas fell just a few games short of advancing to the next stage of Pony Baseball at the 10U level. At the Pony League Caribbean and Latin American Zone Mustang Championships in Panama, the team was eliminated after a 3-0 semifinals loss to the Dominican Republic on Monday.

Team Bahamas finished the group stage at 3-0 following wins over Ecuador, Colombia, and Panama. A total of 10 teams played in the qualifier. The winner of the tournament advances to the Pony World Series in August. The team included players and a coaching staff from the Junior Baseball League of Nassau, Freedom Farm Baseball League, and Grand Bahama.

Primary School Soccer League

The primary school soccer league in Grand Bahama came to a close yesterday. The GBPSAA Arthur Paris/Mary Nabb Soccer Tournament ended yesterday with the Lewis Yard Primary Eagles defeating the Maurice Moore Primary Raccoons 1-0. The MVP was Kathleen Major.

In the boys’ division, Mary Star of the Sea Crusaders defeated the Sunland Baptist Stingers 1-0. The MVP was Torian Knowles.
