HAITI – Haiti has elected a new prime minister, marking a significant step toward political and economic stability, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell.

The nation has faced severe turmoil, with gangs overtaking the streets.

CARICOM has been actively involved in providing assistance, and Haiti’s progress will be a key topic at the upcoming CARICOM Heads of Government meeting in Grenada.

Kenya has agreed to lead a multinational force now deployed in Haiti, with The Bahamas committing to send 150 troops to support the mission.

According to Mitchell, the force has not yet been fully constituted.

Haiti’s situation took a dramatic turn following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

The World Food Program reports nearly 4.9 million Haitians are now facing hunger due to a worsening food crisis compounded by violence.

For years, The Bahamas has experienced a significant influx of Haitian nationals seeking a better life.
